The Luna Residence, located in Dallas’s Urban Reserve, was designed for a young family of four on a 50-foot-wide, zero-lot-line site. The design reconciles the development’s design restrictions with the opportunities presented by the site’s mature trees. Rather than treating the exterior as leftover space, the house organizes itself around a series of outdoor rooms that extend the interior. Bedrooms and living spaces open to the side yard, while the office connects to a rear courtyard. Circulation and services are consolidated along the required firewall, allowing the primary living spaces to remain open and connected to the landscape.
Large existing trees provide shade and shape the home’s relationship to the Texas climate. A 10-foot-tall glazed south wall brings natural light and views deep into the house, while the roof is carefully designed to control solar exposure throughout the year. A simple white roof edge shades the interior and visually connects street and garden, creating a modest house that opens itself to its context.
