The Cardozo Residence was designed for a suburban lot in Burleson, Texas, set within a two-acre wooded site governed by HOA design guidelines. The project explores modesty within a suburban context dominated by homes ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 square feet. While meeting the required pitched-roof guidelines, the design avoids the large, singular massing typical of the neighborhood.
The house is organized as a series of discreet, pitched-roof volumes that radiate across the site, negotiating its dramatic topography and mature vegetation. The resulting composition stretches through the landscape in both plan and section, creating moments of privacy while maintaining a deliberate relationship to the street and surrounding community. The design seeks to balance the needs of a relatively large family home with a sense of restraint, using scale, fragmentation, and landscape to create a house that is both generous and modest.
